It may only be February, but the first Ranga rugby of 2025 has taken place with our Under 13 Gladiators playing at the Lunar Festival last weekend.
Invited to participate in the opening ceremony of the festival that celebrates the Chinese New Year, it was a great way to kick of the year for our Gladiators who will be touring to Japan at the end of the junior season.
Preparation for the match began in mid-January, focusing initially on fitness before progressing to contact training. The squad was divided into two teams—Gladiators Green and Gladiators Heritage—to ensure they were match-ready. During this time, players were also introduced to the haka, a first-time experience for some.
The Gladiators took to the field in a spirited contest and a great display of rugby for festival goers. Gladiators Green emerged victorious, with an exceptional performance from man of the match Flynn Hunt, who showcased his skills in the centres.
Following the game, the team was invited into the dignitary area to perform the haka. Despite limited preparation time, the Gladiators delivered a passionate haka, proudly representing one of the special parts of New Zealand and New Zealand rugby culture in front of festival attendees and distinguished guests. As a token of appreciation, players received beautiful Year of the Snake gifts and a generous donation towards their fundraising efforts.
A huge thank you to the festival organisers and the Chinese community for their support and hospitality.
